International museum day
17th May 2026
Book launch on 17 May to mark International Museum Day.

“Museums uniting a divided world” – this year’s theme for International Museum Day highlights the special role of museums in a time of global challenges and social tensions. Museums can build bridges – between generations, cultures and different ways of life.
To mark this year’s International Museum Day, the Typewriter Museum aims to build bridges in many directions with a very special event: in collaboration with the Partschins section of the South Tyrol Alpine Club, the museum is presenting Karin Ortler’s book *Die Julius-Payer-Hütte*, published in 2025 to mark the 150th anniversary of the Payer Hut.
The author, whose family has run the hut for over 100 years and who herself spent many summers there in her youth, recounts the fascinating history of the hut, which was built in 1875 as a self-sufficient base. Through historical photographs, original documents and eyewitness accounts, the history of alpine tourism in the Ortler region is brought to life in a vivid manner. The book also explores the hut’s role during the First World War, as well as the daily lives of the hut keepers.
Alongside the author, several guests of honour and eyewitnesses will offer fascinating insights into the history of the Payer Hut.
The event begins on Sunday, 17 May at 10 am. The museum will then remain open until 5 pm with free admission.
Free admission 10 am–5 pm
